Gratefulness
So much kindness comes towards me from strangers–the many who willingly pay taxes so I receive clean water, libraries, open spaces even between buildings. And there are kind strangers in my past who I sometimes gather in my mind and thank. They had no reason to be kind to me, no personal profit from that generous gaze that still warms me. I try to return that gaze and pass it on.
Kevin, I so appreciated this response. It reminded me of a 16th/17th (not sure) century mystic–Brother Lawrence. Know him? He said that when he had a challenge, he prayed and then if things went well, he expressed gratitude for the grace to do it, and if things went wrong, he prayed, “So I would always do except for Your grace” and …here is the part I think is so challenging and liberating…”and then I give no more thought to it.” I’m paraphrasin...
