I meet you again, Grief,
On this long journey
And I recognise you
From my past, the near
And distant past
And I realise I know you well
For you have been my companion
Since the one that mattered most
Left, leaving me a child’s aching heart.

You have walked beside me
For many reasons
Closer and further
At different times
Sometimes wearing other faces

And now it has come to this:
I am here now, in this...

I meet you again, Grief,
On this long journey
And I recognise you
From my past, the near
And distant past
And I realise I know you well
For you have been my companion
Since the one that mattered most
Left, leaving me a child’s aching heart.

You have walked beside me
For many reasons
Closer and further
At different times
Sometimes wearing other faces

And now it has come to this:
I am here now, in this place
And not another place
I mourn what could have been
I mourn what could have been
I cry and I sigh
I rage and I fight
I withdraw and withhold

And yet, at each turn in the road
I chose
I waited
I loved
I lost
I grew
I let go
I embraced
I danced
I surrendered

And now I accept this Grief
I make space for it, beside me
Alongside the joy and gratitude
And I walk towards
What is waiting for me
Around the next bend.
