Gratefulness
After spending several months traveling (I was 19 years old) my mom picked me up at the airport and was driving me home, when we saw my dad driving his company car. (As a manager of a bakery, he would visit different stores and we just happened to see him on the road.) We managed to get his attention by honking and waving (this was decades before cell phones) and then, both my mom and dad pulled over. I ran out of the car towards my dad and my dad ran towards me, picked me up and gave me a bi...

We managed to get his attention by honking and waving (this was decades before cell phones) and then, both my mom and dad pulled over. I ran out of the car towards my dad and my dad ran towards me, picked me up and gave me a big hug. My dad was not normally a hugger but he was so happy to see me home again. So, that hug from my dad is a very dear memory. I am grateful that my parents supported me in my desire to travel and visit other places but also grateful that they both were happy to see me home again!
I snail mail ‘Get Well’ cards to people I know who have health issues and need encouragement, uplifting and prayers. I don’t write much in the card, but I do say that my prayers and thoughts are with them. And hope that they will get well soon.
By reflecting, instead of reacting.
I wrote a letter to the owners of a company because it gave me time to reflect rather than attend a meeting facilitated by the management, because I felt I might end up saying something, by reacting too quickly, that I will later regret.
I wrote a letter to try to ‘right’ a ‘wrong’ that hopefully the reader will also reflect and will respond in a positive and beneficial way.
That it is important to trust your intuition. This is what I hope to teach my daughter and grand-daughter. Use your intuition.
When I see large and tall trees. I know they have lived before I was born and will continue to live after I die. I am humbled by trees. I am grateful for trees for all they provide and all the lessons they have taught me.
I cherish early mornings as they are a fresh start to a day.
By picking up litter. There are many things that can be solved – not by big government nor world leaders nor international treaties – but by each one of us, doing our part to make this world a better place.
If we all stopped littering, and then, if just 1/7th of the world population each picked up one piece of litter, that would be a billion pieces of litter picked up around the world.

I look for the little things to show I care: a kind word, sending a greeting card or ecard (to save on time and paper) and saying thank you to those who show they care for me.
Knowing the presence and peace of God.
I would take the time, money, and resources to offer a ‘hand up’ rather than a ‘hand out’ to those in need. Rather than give someone a fish, it is better to teach them how to fish.
Teaching someone how to fish requires training, skills, equipment, resources, finances and time. So, if I had enough of all these, then I would share freely on offering a ‘hand up’.
I live in a different part of the world than where I was born and raised. My mother lived in three different countries, on three different continents – three different cultures. So, I grew up and still live being accepting towards others who are different.

One of my childhood friends was a different race/color/culture/religion than me. We vowed that we would always be friends and be open and friendly to those who are different than us. Sadly, our parents could not break through those differences, especially her parents. We lost connect with each other many years ago but I have not forgotten our vow and promise to each other that we would reach out to others who are indeed different than us.
Some of my friends and I played a ‘role playing’ game. It felt good to just be lost in a world of our own and be able to shut out all the problems of this world.
This ‘role playing’ game helped me realize that I can have some control over the events that are happening and not feel so overwhelmed with all the horrible news in the world.
Playing helps me to sort things out and therefore, helps me to be calmed and at peace within.
The smell of roses. I am grateful that thorns have roses. After my grandpa passed away, my grandma moved from living in the country into a little house in a small city, she hired a landscaper to remove all the grass from her front yard to replace it with a rose garden. The smell of roses reminds me of my Grandma’s rose garden and her love for roses.
I think God is waiting for me to be kind. To say things that need to be said, with kind words.
I am very touched by your heart and that you know your mother loves you unconditionally, even if you and your mother don’t see eye to eye. I have a grown daughter and we don’t see eye to eye but I do know that she knows I love her unconditionally, no matter what.

She has always been my ‘rebellious child’ and I have always been there for her, trying to find the balance between letting her discover who she is, allowing her to be herself and letting her know when I feel that she is not doing things that will keep her healthy and safe.
And she has learned to appreciate a mother who is a ‘helicopter mom’ – a mom who hovers over her children – rather than have a mother who doesn’t care at all.
My daughter has a very different personally than me (she is a lot more outgoing than me) and I have learned so much from her and appreciate her uniqueness, creativity and zeal for life. And I do love her for who she is.
I really appreciate your words about your mother and your relationship with your mother.
The waves of the ocean are very calming.
This site is indeed an oasis — on the internet. 🙂
Very profound answer. Sometimes, or more often than not, we get ourselves in the way. However we want to call this ‘Being’ or ‘Intelligences’ that is beyond ourselves, I do believe that it is indeed being aware of that Presence that can bring Peace. .
I have come to the conclusion that what this world needs is more people ‘doing less’ and meditating (and praying) more to allow the Silence of God to speak. Sometimes, we don’t need to do more because we get ourselves in the way. I agree with you, Patjos, we just need to let the ‘Light of Love’ shine through. This is a reminder for me, to just ‘let go and let God.’
It is important to not feel guilty by feeling that we are not doing enough. But to do what we can and find peace in what we can do. It does not do us nor others any good, if we burn ourselves out. We each have the task of being caring and thus, to encourage others to be more caring, will indeed make a more caring world.
I really appreciate you saying ‘I will choose to celebrate what I am doing.’
I love the smell of crayons as they remind me of my childhood and early school classrooms. And I much prefer reading a REAL book in my hands that I can turn the pages and even dog-ear, if I want.
