Caring for others allows me to give and receive love from others and opens me up to connecting with others. It is not just the person who is cared for who receives a gift, but myself as well because of that feeling of connection. Furthermore, it gives me a balance between my individuality and freedom and my union, interdependence, and interconnection with others. I intend to be more loving to others, so that I may open myself to more joy.
it sends the right chemicals to my brain. it takes me out of my “problems” and re directs my energy towards helping others. our legacy is other people…everyone we come in contact with, therefore, caring for others is my legacy. creating curriculum/content that enhances/cares for others’ lives makes the world better and creates a higher vibration/energy.
We are One, there is no separation, it just looks that way. Caring for you, being there for you, Loving you – I am Loving me.
To care for another I must leave my own ego and open myself to experiencing another’s reality. For the moment, my self-centered monkey chatter is silenced. I gain observation skills, my practice of empathy moves a slight bit closer to the universal compassion I hold as my intention. I am reminded once again that I am part of a greater whole.
*Helps me realize I’m not as important as I often believe myself to be
*Makes me feel better about myself
*Aligns me with God
It takes me out of the little prison of self and frees me from ego bondage which in turn enriches my spirit and grants me serenity while I walk towards ultimate liberation.
a smile in return and a profound look in the eye just does it all for me…
Liza, thank-you for that reflection! It made me think how good I feel when someone does smile in return! In your photo, you have a beautiful smile!
Peace and blessings , Sheila
Somehow when I get out of my normal daily concerns and reach out to care for another I am enlarged.
Sharing in the mutuality of human experience is one of the gifts of our creation.
Caring for others is what allows me to see God in humanity. It opens me up to the opportunity to be blessed by the experiences that connect us.
I have done some hospice volunteering. It is really about sharing presence; his or her presence with me and mine with his or hers. Simplicity realized.
Caring for others helps me support the illusion that I am better than they are. I am the helper, they are the helped. Though I keep it quietly to myself, an aura of moral superiority clouds the relationship. I am left with something more comfortable than intimacy, but less real.
It takes me out of myself and allows me to walk beside someone for a time. That can give us better perspective as well as a sense of gratitude for connection, community, and love.
We forget sometimes that being allowed to do that for someone is an honor, a privilege, and a gift as well as a skill that can be learned and practiced. Thus we can be grateful for being offered a chance to help ease another’s burden while connecting to our own humanity and community. And that is a beautiful thing!
read your reply here, I am new, by the way, .. but so true, it is a privilege and honour indeed to be able to.. be here in this world and help Namaste Dakki
Thank you, Dakki! And welcome! This is a wonderful place.
I think Br. David said life is all about relationships, and more and more I realise how cultivating friendship enriches my life.
Indeed, Palm!
Caring for others as way opens makes me whole as a person. It completes my own humanity.
I’ve been buying a lot of presents for others lately. Last month’s credit card bill was full of birthday presents. It’s a nice feeling: Getting something that you hope will please the other person. I could get used to this! lol!
Aside from the “feel good” factor, caring for others, at least for me, enriches the relationship. It’s complex though; there’s a balance between the care for others and the care for self. And there’s tensions that come through for me where caring may have some conditions attached eg I may want someone {else/self} to be other than as they are. I get the opportunity to notice that!
Malag, I agree and identify with what you said. Thank-you for saying it so well!
Peace and blessings to you, Sheila
