Seeing that I’ve gotten through things I was attached to going through, so wouldn’t get over. Seeing that I know who I am and that my life is meaningful, no matter what. That I know how to get past the darkness but I allow myself to linger in whatever I’m feeling, without running away. 3 Reply Trevor6 years agoTrevorBy getting an ego check from reality thrown harder than Gretzky railing someone into the boards. 3 Reply elizxbethe6 years agoelizxbetheIt’s so hard to focus on gratitude during times of loss or hardship, but reminding yourself of the little things can help a lot. Not dwelling (but yet observing) difficult thoughts is important — but also remember that although not every day is good, there is good in every day. 3 Reply Javier Visionquest6 years agoJavier VisionquestThis month is exactly such a period. My wife, the breadwinner in our family, will be unemployed in a week and we have to move. I was recently confronted with health issues for the first time in my life – February is going to be an anxious month, but I refuse to give myself over to pessimism, come what may. I’m quoting Br. I’m glad you are inspired. 🙂 0 Reply Aine6 years agoAineI found gratitude as a practice, this site, and some wonderful souls, while clawing my way out of what was probably the hardest period in my life. I was already pretty adept at finding the gift hidden in the mud, so to speak, having had rather a lot of practice, but I had never seen gratitude as a practice. Doing so gave it more focus, more intent, and better results. In my case, it was the hardship and loss that drove me into the arms of gratefulness, and for that I am indeed grateful. 5 Reply Shelley6 years agoShelleyby being grateful for the smallest things….. I start with that 4 Reply Barbara Morris6 years agoBarbara MorrisI am always grateful for the many people who show caring and humanity during dark times. It is in them I find life’s purpose. 5 Reply kathleen6 years agokathleenGratefulness does not come naturally to me during those periods. I am more likely to figure out why and have a why me syndrome! Having said that when I do turn to gratefulness as a practice because it is a practice for me, it softens the impact and it helps me with the loss or difficulty. I value what I have more. 3 Reply Chester6 years agoChesterHardship and loss link directly with gratefulness. It is just a different perspective – when I have felt loss, it comes with the simultaneous recognition of what I had. Mindfulness of what I had or have is I suppose the foundation of gratefulness. 5 Reply Kevin6 years agoKevinDuring periods of hardship and loss, I remain grateful that my faith and the work and presence of the Holy Spirit, will carry me onward to where I need to be. 5 Reply Ose6 years agoOseDuring the hardest time of my life so far, gratefulness nothing less but saved me. It transformed a dark state full of hopelessness and despair, a feeling to be completely cut off from everything which makes it worth living in this world to feeling gratefully inspired again, connected and supported. It allowed me to see that I am the one to choose the perspective, the lens through which I perceive the world, and that this is not a fixed reality but a choice I take. In choosing gratefulness, all came back; so deeply grateful for this process, which brought back hope, inspiration, joy, love, humor, space and more freedom. May gratefulness, which is offered in so many creative ways here on this site to be experienced as transforming and healing to all of us, may blossom in every heart.
