I find a deep sense of relaxation and release as the needles are placed. Then I can feel nestled by the soft sheet over my body, feeling my body supported by the table and knee bolster. In that space, I feel safe and relaxed enough to be open, yet alert enough to hear. I can find the same in prayer, though it is much more hit and miss. On Sunday I sometimes attend a group meditation and on Wed I attend a small group meditation after a talk there. Sometimes I go on weekly or daily retreats. When the inner chatter takes over through the day I need to take a break go to the ladies room and breathe for a few uninterrupted minutes. 3 Reply Trl7 years agoTrlI can be still with myself, wherever I am…and listen to the world. 3 Reply salann7 years agosalannI live in a beautiful part of the world. At night before I go to sleep I connect with source and just be present and grateful. 5 Reply Mavorneen7 years agoMavorneenI have to be totally alone outside – away from all the noise of the city – In a park, by the lake, etc but no one can be around or I will be distracted. 4 Reply Ben7 years agoBenLaying down on the earth at a park by the woods near where I live, with a pine tree I especially love there, or with my friend whose actual name is Wilderness, or with a group mostly of strangers I met last night who took a moment in stillness to bless the new home and life direction of my downstairs neighbor, or with my friend Kaela practicing shiatsu massage which is so gentle and reconnects my body-mind to the heart and caring touch of the still nervous system and the chi flowing at rest, or ... Thank you for this question! 🙂 Read More6 Reply Antoinette7 years agoAntoinetteI can be still and listen almost anywhere as long as I let go of any inside negative chatter of stories etc that the mind creates to distract me. Nature and in meditation are the two most obvious places where stillness can reached. However mindfulness can be attended whenever I’m engaged and let go of my minds chatter to become one with love. 3 Reply Aine7 years agoAineNature and quiet help me listen best, and when I cannot find quiet in my environment, I work to find that space within myself. I cannot function without the ability to be still and listen. Without it, everything just goes kablooey! 6 Reply Ben7 years agoBenYes!!!! 0 Reply Gina7 years agoGinaAGREED ! 0 Reply Ed Schulte7 years agoEd Schultewhere can I be still and listen? I needed the solitude and also the time to exercise, pray, read, do calligraphy. I still do those things but I don’t have to arise so early to do them! 0 Reply Kevin7 years agoKevinI am most able to be still and listen, and especially able to listen for the Spirit at work in my life whenever I am sitting in a Quaker meeting for worship. I attend a Quaker Meeting that is un-programmed, meaning we worship together in silence. In our ever clamoring, media drenched world I am especially grateful that this tradition exists. – Kevin 10 Reply Aine7 years agoAineI have wondered about trying that faith tradition myself, largely for the same reason. My idea of the perfect church would be a candlelit stone grotto in the woods somewhere. What was spoken would be only that which was necessary, and we would all leave in silence, pondering. Perhaps I have an inner hermit. 😉 3 Reply Kevin7 years agoKevinYou know, Aine, my wife, who is also a Quaker, would likely take off for the candlelit stone grotto with you! 0 Reply Christina7 years agoChristinaI’m a good listener, learned it from many years of listening to my mother, who’s a talker. When I’m in conversation with others, I can be still & listen. Also, when I retire at about 5p, get under my covers, see the view of trees, sky and sunset framed by my windows. Then I can relax and listen. 4 Reply Deb Waites7 years agoDeb WaitesI can be still and listen to anyone, anywhere. I engage in stillness daily to listen……for God….for silence….for nature. 4 Reply My Private Gratitude Journal Write an entry in your private gratefulness journal Get Started This site is brought to you by A Network for Grateful Living, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
