Homeless, downtrodden, gangbangers, many of which are not people you would want to sit next to on the “el” or would be wary of standing next to in line at the grocery store. Typically, I would avoid these street people but then, as Fr. Jim reminded us – Christ died for them, too. Not just for we “good people.” Gotta work on that one! 3 Reply Doreen Nixon7 years agoDoreen NixonI can stretch my heart bigger by acknowledging the pain that lies in others. It takes me from a judgement state into an emphatic state of mind. Silently I say sorry for your pain…it brings both of us to the light of love. 5 Reply Michael7 years agoMichaelI like the Buddhist line from Verses on the Faith Mind: “Don’t seek the truth, just cherish no opinions.” With that out of the way love comes more easily. 6 Reply Michael7 years agoMichaelI need to include those that oppress…those that willingly or unknowingly participate in actions and systems that hurt others. the agape type of love towards oppressors while working daily for social justice. 4 Reply Carol7 years agoCarolI just read the inspiring article by the Gratefulness Team about making Thanksgiving more meaningful and it is filled with wonderful suggestions and I plan to share it with family and friends. I also read a beautiful poem this morning that is in the public domain. The poet is Paul Laurence Dunbar and I have pasted it below. The the gratefulness team’s words and this poem are both stretching my heart to love bigger. It’s all a farce,—these tales they tell About the breezes sighing, And moans astir o’er field and dell, Because the year is dying. Such principles are most absurd,— I care not who first taught ’em; There’s nothing known to beast or bird To make a solemn autumn. In solemn times, when grief holds sway With countenance distressing, You’ll note the more of black and gray Will then be used in dressing. Now purple tints are all around; The sky is blue and mellow; And e’en the grasses turn the ground From modest green to yellow. The seed burrs all with laughter crack On featherweed and jimson; And leaves that should be dressed in black Are all decked out in crimson. A butterfly goes winging by; A singing bird comes after; And Nature, all from earth to sky, Is bubbling o’er with laughter. The ripples wimple on the rills, Like sparkling little lasses; The sunlight runs along the hills, And laughs among the grasses. The earth is just so full of fun It really can’t contain it; And streams of mirth so freely run The heavens seem to rain it. Don’t talk to me of solemn days In autumn’s time of splendor, Because the sun shows fewer rays, And these grow slant and slender. Why, it’s the climax of the year,— The highest time of living!— Till naturally its bursting cheer Just melts into thanksgiving. I can be more expansive in the little moments of now. Trying to “stretch my heart” puts effort and stress in my way. 5 Reply Ed Schulte7 years agoEd SchulteHow can I stretch my heart to love bigger? Alignment, Attunement, At-One-Ment. This is what Joshua Immanuel the Christ was teaching in his parable about the woman and the three measures of flour. Christ said: The kingdom from heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.” The woman represents our personality and the three measures of flour are our three bodies: material, Psychical and Noetical. The woman had to mix them in a balanced proportion with leaven {the Etheric Vitality) until they were one. So this is our task – to blend, harmonize and connect our material body, with the body of our emotions and the body of our thoughts and unite them as one. Make these three bodies resonate together in harmony and ALL lower forms of love ( reflected love) will be identical to the original ONE ( unconditional ) Love. Letting go my preconcepts about the world: it is ONE world! Would love to see more of the world, to travel, explore, find out and being grateful of how I am able to discover the world; being at service of love and peace. 3 Reply Kevin7 years agoKevinI am reasonably content with where my heart, spirit, actions and expressions of love are with respect to the world. It is my sense that it is less about “bigger” and “more,” about being present for each quiet and unseen moment where love is released to do its work. – Kevin 6 Reply Antoinette7 years agoAntoinetteI look and open my heart with an attitude of gratitude. To allow to be open to whatever life brings and to respond from my heart to whatever life brings. Then I guess, love can expand and include all, which the heart meets. And I can exercise this through meditation, but as well any moment while I breathe in, and out. I can change a restricting attitude while becoming aware of the free space, which allows me to change if I go for it.
