I didn’t know this at the time as the money I did have was given to my best friends mother and step father as they were the ones we were going with. They made sure that when I ran out of the money, they continued to look after me and not mention it to me. How lovely Read More0 Reply Aine7 years agoAineThe smell of the first earth of spring. Sauteed onions were the basis for everything she cooked and that smell brings back memories of a delicious hot meal that was always available. No matter how little my grandmother had, she would always feed everyone who entered her house and each meal started with sauteed onions. 4 Reply Kit7 years agoKitThe aroma of a new book. Brings me back to my early grade school days the classroom books. Oh, how I loved the stories. Moving up grades, I could read myself! Nothing smells so good as a new adventure just waiting to bring me along surrounded in the wonderful smell of new books. I could spend an entire afternoon at the bookstores. Lost in my own world. 🙂 4 Reply Susan7 years agoSusanI love the smell of crayons as they remind me of my childhood and early school classrooms. And I much prefer reading a REAL book in my hands that I can turn the pages and even dog-ear, if I want. 0 Reply Hot Sauce7 years agoHot SauceThe smell of pine needles and pine trees reminds me of the joy of Christmas. The story is this: waking up in the morning aware of the new birth of the Christ within and of the joy of the shepherds and angels and then opening presents while remembering the spirituality of the indigenous peoples who celebrated the winter solstice, Santa Clause representing a kind of modern shaman or wizard. All kinds of gifts and spiritual value to Christmas! 2 Reply KC7 years agoKCHome baked cookies fresh out of the oven, and the more subtle smell of the gooey dough in the bowl and on my fingers. My mom made many batches of small cookies with great love! 4 Reply SC7 years agoSCFermenting Grapes. This was when my grandparents were still alive and, I know now, that they were the glue keeping my family united. I surely do appreciate those times. 3 Reply Deb7 years agoDebReading the reflections written before me, I could smell each one and thought “yes! That’s the one!” How delightful! My favorite daily fragrance is the coffee brewing in the morning. It reminds me how far I have come and how grateful I am to be where I am. 3 Reply Susan7 years agoSusanThe smell of roses. I am grateful that thorns have roses. After my grandpa passed away, my grandma moved from living in the country into a little house in a small city, she hired a landscaper to remove all the grass from her front yard to replace it with a rose garden. The smell of roses reminds me of my Grandma’s rose garden and her love for roses. 4 Reply Amor fati7 years agoAmor fatiThe really cold air of Minnesota winter, caught in the fur of a cat who has just returned home. 4 Reply Always Learning7 years agoAlways LearningPine… reminds me of Christmas tree shopping and putting up our tree when I was little. Oh, goodness, did I LOVE that Christmas tree. ???? Still do. I don’t do a live tree any more, but I do use pine candles. We are coming into the season of several holidays. I imagine many will have memories of food, leaves, trees, and other special scents associated with the “BER” months. ???? 3 Reply Virginia7 years agoVirginiaSummer rain. How all around me smelled fresh and new. We would play and run in the rain in our bathing suits. In the south it was warm enough . Visiting my cousins. Walking in a gully and mud oozing between my toes. 4 Reply Pilgrim7 years agoPilgrimMorning coffee. Reminds me of early mornings finding my dad in the kitchen before work, and also my grandfather in his kitchen before work on our out of town visits. Being quiet together with each of them, as I was an early riser. And a second scent – or grand mixture – the forest, anytime and in any season. Ever-ancient, ever-new. 5 Reply Kevin7 years agoKevinThe aroma of fresh-cut hay curing in a field reminds of my farming years. There’s a farm that I drive by frequently and whenever they’re making hay it brings me back instantly to a time when I was younger and more connected to the land and livestock for my livelihood. I know too that I don’t want to return to that way of life but I don’t want to forget what it was like, either. – Kevin 5 Reply Christina7 years agoChristinaFall is coming in the Northeast US and what comes to me is the smell of burning leaves. It evokes memories of my childhood. Dusky evenings spent outdoors with the snap of coldness in the air. The tapestry of fall colors of the trees down the hill from where we lived. And then, coming inside to the warmth of the house. Made me grateful to be alive, although I didn’t realize it then. 6 Reply Antoinette7 years agoAntoinetteThe smell of the native flowers of Hawaii are the first wonderful memories my childhood. The Plumeria trees, Pikake or Jasmine, Tuberose, and Ginger are all flowers I used to wear behind my ear. I used to spend hours picking them and making Hawaiian flower leis. The smell of the beach, salt water and flowers take me away to paradise. I’m so grateful for having the amazing opportunity of growing up in paradise. 8 Reply Deb7 years agoDebI went to Hawaii for the first time this April, Antoinette, and found it just as you say! We are retuning again in 2018 for six weeks. I loved wearing flowers in my hair and leis! The fragrance of the Island was delightful! 1 Reply My Private Gratitude Journal Write an entry in your private gratefulness journal Get Started This site is brought to you by A Network for Grateful Living, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
