Always Learning7 years agoAlways LearningI have certainly learned from my parents and family, my friends, and my teachers… but I believe my greatest teachers have been my students. They taught me countless lessons about life… determination… risk taking… forgiveness… perseverance… love. I taught everything from 1st grade to senior English. Each student gave me the challenge to help BOTH of us achieve our personal best. I feel so incredibly. blessed. ❤️ 2 Reply Hot Sauce7 years agoHot SauceMy pastor at the church I attended as a child impacted me by teaching me that just because an authority figure has a point of view, that does not make it true. My pastor at the church I attended as a child impacted me by teaching me that just because an authority figure has a point of view, that does not make it true. I sometimes wonder if the conflict we had was some kind of pre-life contract. My AP Literature and C0mposition teacher in high school, by opening me to the ideas of Sartrean existentialism while simultaneously giving me the tools to question some of its ideas, led me to seek out what is mine to do on an ethical level, rather than merely an existential level. Jesus of Nazareth taught me to befriend everyone, even and especially social outcasts and people who are not always kind to others, since they are often the people who need the most love. My religious studies professor allowed me to finally understand the Bible on an academic level and to become literate in religious research resources. The supportive and welcoming community at the UCC church I attend have supported me in growing in spiritual wisdom and ethics and have also inspired me to attend Doane University, a college affiliated with the United Church of Christ. The various writers who have contributed to nderf.org have allowed me to have deeper spiritual insights into the nature of reality through their sharing of near-death experiences. The wonderful people here on demo.gratefulness.org, as well as its founder, have supported me in becoming a thankful person and in appreciating even the hard times. The site has also allowed me to examine its partners and see the wonderful work they do. One of my communications professors has had a profound impact on me by teaching me about dialectical tensions and allowing me to see that the struggles I have had in the past are not as unusual as I once thought. I also appreciate all the people who have supported me on my life journey at Doane University, including professors, staff, faculty, and friends who have helped me make wonderful friendships and learn more than I ever thought was possible. I am especially grateful to Source, who has led me to grow in wisdom and find that reality is much more exciting than I could have ever thought. Source has, furthermore, provided me with everything listed above, and I feel prosperous from all His/Her/Its blessings. There are many more people (and animals too) that I could continue to list, but if I wrote them all, there would not be enough memory for the computer to store it. I am grateful to all those who I have not mentioned who have made an impact on my life. Read More3 Reply H. Mary LACH7 years agoH. Mary LACHFamilies ,teachers, friends, mentors. They have always helped me when I’ve wrecked myself. Grateful for them. They have listened and given wise counsel, honored my tears and patched me back together. Particularly grateful to Pam, oh Pam I miss you!, Father Sam, Larry and George…and others who’s names have escaped me now. Peace and blessings be upon them all. 2 Reply Jil Coolidge7 years agoJil CoolidgeMy mother, grandmother and aunt have had the greatest impact on my life. Their world view and values permeated every moment I spent with them. To this day, I believe in the goodness of humans, the gift of compassion and the value of optimism. 2 Reply Antoinette7 years agoAntoinetteMy parents and close friends have had a huge impact on my life. When my mate of 40 years decided we needed to divorce, my son saw me thru while still treating his father respectfully. He reminded me to stay with my spiritual practices, to continue journaling, and even today makes time to phone visit weekly. Our relationship reminds me that my life has not been a waste even though my life’s work shows very little tangible results. 3 Reply kathleen7 years agokathleenMy family of origin and my own family. I am forced to look at the easy relationships and the difficult. Through work situations I have experienced a few challenges and these too have forced me to dig deeper. Outside of that I have admired others I’ve met and known and they continually inspire me to no end. Usually what they have in common is a great outlook on life that allows them to be compassionate and engage with life fully. 3 Reply Michael7 years agoMichaelnot to get out of the question hahhhh, but truly everyone I have taken the time to listen to. I remember being struck by his “Gratefulness: The Heart of Prayer” in the mid-80s. My parents (I guess so many will say that,) for loving and bruising me, all at the same time. It’s amazing: even their offhand opinions have affected me deeply. And a relatively new friend, who shares my spiritual path with me. For these, and for you, I am so grateful! A good day to all who stop here! 6 Reply Joanne7 years agoJoanneChristina, “loving and bruising all at the same time” is the most compassionate description of what parents do that I have ever heard. I never post anything, but this took my breath away and I wanted you to know how much of an impact you had in a strangers life today. Thank you very much.
